What’s up!
Today we will be looking at a fast and free solution for disk cloning on Windows using some software from the guys at Macrium. The specific software we will use is called Reflect X Home, although they do have other solutions ready for deployment.
You will have to register on their website to activate the free trial for 30 days. Then you should be good to go!
The tool itself it really easy to use, but I will guide you on how to do it below…
Before starting, we’ll make sure to have a few things that will certainly be helpful throughout the process.
Let’s begin!
Requirements
- Register and install Reflect X Home so you can use it for 30 days trial.
- Hard drive or solid state drive for cloning – Amazon has some cheap ones.
- You might need one or two SATA adapters to connect drives to your computer.
Note that not all of these are strict requirements as you might already have older drives you want to use for cloning or for (3) you might have a desktop with plenty of internal slots for drives in which case you wouldn’t need an adapter.
Instructions
Let’s start by getting familiar with the program’s interface.
Now we can proceed by cloning disk 2 onto disk 3.
Once you’ve hit “Clone this disk…” it will bring up another screen asking which disk you would like to clone it to. We will go ahead and select disk 3 – but make sure to delete previous partitions first. 😉
Once that’s done, let’s choose “Shrink or extend to fill the target disk” option to copy disk 2’s partition table.
Basically we are choosing this option because we have a 1TB disk which is being copied onto a 512GB disk. Choosing this option will automatically resize the partitions for the task.
If we had disks of the same size (that is both 1TB), then we would choose the first option: “Exact partition offset and length”.
Ok, now we are ready to start!
Once everything is done you should see an alert similar to the one below:
